Annecy Business Review: American Diner
Finding American food in France beyond McDonalds and Dominos Pizza is a quest. Finding a restaurant that serves American food and looks like an authentic American restaurant in France is an even more challenging quest. It appears that search is over, because I found a new restaurant called American Diner on the outskirts of Annecy, in Epagny, that takes diners on a space and time warp to what many would call the American glory days.
Having opened in September of 2011, American Diner is an American themed restaurant and there is nothing quite like it in Annecy. When one pulls up to the establishment, they’re greeted by a neon sign that hangs above its diner-like metal paneling which do the job of attracting visitors and giving a fun first impression. Enter in through the lobby which has a bar and a stool seating, like a flash back into the sock hop, milk shake days. I have to admit, sitting in American Diner made me feel like I was back home in the USA – at a Denny’s or IHOP, but ten times better.
American Diner is decorated in every kind of American kitsch decor one can think of and no detail was left to spare. From the Chevy Corvette grill replica hanging on the wall, the metal advertising panels, the statue of a waitress in roller skates to the booth seating, the juke box, and the neon lighting, the decor takes guests on a trip down America’s memory lane. Everything is big and spacious like America itself, even the menus are huge. With around 240 seats, there is seating everywhere – indoors and outdoors – for small and large parties alike, making it a great place for families, friends, or couples who want to have a fun casual dining experience. When it comes to the menu, American Diner serves authentic and generous portions. There is a section of the menu that offers a “French Touch” which is a selection of French style burgers. They also serve fajitas, salads, meat platters and starters like onion rings and mozzarella sticks. Their desserts feature Ben & Jerry’s ice creams and other goodies like a rockslide brownie, cheesecake, and pecan pie. American diner is open seven days a week from 8:30 to 10:30, so they offer a breakfast menu starting at 4.90€. The kid’s menu is €6.90 which includes a main dish, side, and dessert.
For 6.90€, Mr J had an American style hot dog and served with fresh fries and for €9.90, I had the hamburger special – an American style hamburger with all of the toppings (dill pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, special sauce) with a side of raisin carrot coleslaw and fresh fries. For dessert, we split a strawberry milkshake, at 4.90€, which was a real treat.
The staff’s uniforms are reminiscent of classic American diner uniforms; the waitresses even wear hats. The service was prompt, although French, which means they’re polite but not friendly, which – for the added American experience – I recommend the diner to encourage their staff to chat up their guests as American waitresses are known for doing.
American Diner has heart and soul and it’s easy to tell from the amount of detail and love its owners have put into its decor, uniforms, menu, and overall experience. Mr J and I definitely envisioned ourselves coming back again with friends and family to experience a touch of our American life we miss so much. American Diner is a dining gem in Annecy and a wonderful break from fondue and tartiflettes! If you want to feel transported to a great time and place of American Diner is the place to go.
American Diner is definitely a location one has to drive to. It’s on the outskirts of Annecy in the Grand Epangy shopping area. Continue on Route d’Epagny and make a right just before a car sales company called Annecy Garage.
